Case Study Validation of Product Architecture Strategy and Effect Methodology
Connects real world product architechture design decisions to the potential impacts of those decisions
This paper builds on the authors' earlier work introducing the Product Architecture Strategy and Effect (PASE) methodology — a repeatable process for aggregating statements about the effects of different product architecture strategies from the literature into a systematic database, presented as a "PASE matrix" or "PASE database." Product architecture decisions are made early in development and have far-reaching, often costly-to-reverse effects, so PASE is meant to let teams identify, compare, evaluate, and select desirable architecture strategies before committing resources.
This particular paper focuses on validating the PASE methodology through application to a real case study, testing whether the matrix/database approach produces useful, accurate guidance when applied to an actual product architecture decision rather than only in a demonstrative or illustrative context.
